Inlays and Onlays (also known as partial crowns) are made from a very strong composite material, making them an effective long-term solution to significant tooth damage. They are coloured to match the natural tooth shade and are a great way to bring back the affected tooth’s original functionality and appearance. They are most commonly used on the molar an pre-molar teeth toward the back of the mouth when the damage is too large for a filling but not enough to require a full new crown.
The difference between Inlays & Onlays relates to the position and size of the tooth area that requires repair. An Inlay is used when a tooth has a cavity located within the cusps in the middle of the top surface. If the damage extends over and outside the cusps then an Onlay is required.

The treatment usually requires two visits to the practice. An impression of the affected tooth is taken at the first appointment and this is then sent to a laboratory where the new inlay or onlay will be created. When this is ready, the return appointment is arranged for it to be fitted. The restoration is securely bonded into position using a strong adhesive and the tooth is finally cleaned and polished.
