The official guidance is that children should be registered with a dentist in the period between birth and their first teeth coming through (usually when they are around six months old).
It is recommended that children’s teeth be brushed twice a day for around two minutes using fluoride toothpaste. The second time should be just before they go to bed.
Brushing should be supervised by an adult up until the age of seven, at which point children should be able to manage by themselves.
Only a smear of toothpaste is needed for very young milk teeth. At the age of three this can be increased to a pea-sized amount. Care should be taken with the choice of toothpaste as they contain varying amounts of fluoride.
The amount of fluoride in a toothpaste used by a child should be somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 ppm.
